GUITAR BOOK

Major Scale Modes Designed for the Guitar

Most guitarists who study modes hit the same wall. They understand the theory — they know what Lydian is, they know where it comes from, they can explain the difference between Dorian and Aeolian. But put them on the spot and ask them to play Bb Lydian all over the fretboard, and the hands don’t follow the theory. They find one pattern, stay in it, and the solo sounds forced rather than fluid.

The gap between understanding modes and actually using them is a fretboard problem, not a theory problem. Major Scale Modes Designed for the Guitar solves it directly.

The aim is simple: a visual, practical method for playing any major scale mode all over the fretboard from any root note — with as little mental calculation as possible. Not another explanation of what modes are, but a method for getting them under your fingers so thoroughly that they become instinctive rather than theoretical.

How it works

The book is built around two sections that work in tandem. The more you practice the first section, the more effective the second section becomes — a self-reinforcing system that rewards consistent practice with accelerating results. If you ever feel lost at any point, the solution is always the same: return to the first section and put in more repetitions. It’s as close to a failsafe method as I’ve been able to devise.

What the book covers

  • A visual, fretboard-first method for mapping all seven major scale modes across the entire neck
  • Any mode, any root note, any position — available without having to work it out in your head
  • A two-section system designed to build genuine fretboard fluency rather than isolated pattern knowledge
  • How to go from “I know one Lydian pattern” to having Lydian — or any other mode — available anywhere on the neck
  • An ideal companion to modal theory study — once you learn something theoretically, this method puts it straight onto the fretboard where you can actually use it

Who it’s for

Guitarists who understand modal theory but can’t make it work fluidly in practice. Players who know one or two patterns per mode but feel stuck in those positions. Anyone who wants the modes to feel like second nature rather than something they have to think through every time.

Please note: this is not a modal theory book. For the theory side, Quickstart Guides: Modes covers that ground. This book is purely about mapping the modes onto the fretboard and making them instantly accessible.
