Most guitar diagrams you find online show you what someone else thinks you should practise. This tool lets you build your own.
The Fretboard Printer is a free interactive tool that puts any scale, chord or arpeggio onto a guitar fretboard diagram — exactly the way you want it. Choose your root note, pick a scale or chord type, set your fret range, and the diagram builds instantly. When you’re happy with it, print it out or save it as a file.
What you can do with it
- Print any scale across the full neck or zoom into a specific 4-fret box
- Show chord tones across the entire fretboard — not just one voicing
- Display interval names (R, b3, 5, b7) or note names on every dot
- Overlay two scales or a scale and arpeggio in different colours to see how they connect
- Choose dot shapes (circle, square, diamond) to distinguish multiple layers at a glance
- Switch to black and white mode for clean printing on any printer
- Add a title, subtitle, and your own notes area for practice reminders
- Print multiple diagrams on one page — all 5 pentatonic positions on a single A4 sheet, for example
- Print a sheet of blank fretboard diagrams — choose how many per page, add your own title, and fill them in by hand. Replaces the need for a separate blank fretboard PDF (text and print tab below)
- Works for 6, 7, and 8-string guitars in any tuning
Why print your own diagrams?
Because a diagram you’ve built yourself — with the intervals labelled the way you understand them, in the fret range you’re actually working on — sticks in your memory far better than one you’ve downloaded. Understanding what you’re looking at is the whole point.
