It works, but it produces a particular kind of soloing that’s immediately recognisable: positional, box-bound, predictable.
Watch Steve Vai and something different is happening. His hands move up and down the neck in a way that suggests he’s not thinking in positions at all — the movement is horizontal, fluid, covering the entire length of the fretboard rather than staying locked in one zone. I spent a long time trying to figure out exactly what he was doing, and when I finally cracked it the result was the Horizontal Soloing System.
The key insight is simple: rather than learning scale patterns and moving between positions, horizontal soloing uses a single sequence to unlock the modes of the major scale across the entire neck — no positions, no patterns, just continuous movement up and down the fretboard in any key. Once the logic clicks it applies identically to the harmonic minor, the melodic minor, and the pentatonic scales. The whole neck opens up.
